Social media entrepreneur and actor
Ashong is a man of varied interests and abilities. An actor and activist, he played a feature role in Steven Spielberg's Amistad and was the President of the Black Students Association at Harvard University, from which he graduated with honors. Born in 1975 in Ghana, Ashong moved to Brooklyn, NY when he was 3 years old and then moved with his family to Saudi Arabia. He has received the Harvard Foundation Award for outstanding contributions to Intercultural and Race Relations and the Harvard Faculty of Arts & Sciences' Award for outstanding undergraduate work (the highest award for an undergraduate theses).
Derrick Ashong's message could not be more timely. Too often young people are consumed by the social pressure to "fit in," and "be cool." yet in the larger world, the people who accomplish great things are the ones who pursue an inner sense of the right course to follow. It is those people who ultimately influence change because their minds are free from the shackles of pop trends and social conformity.
