Paul Williams

Paul Williams
Bush doctor hero

Paul Williams lives on the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda where he runs a Community Hospital. Bwindi is the home of half of the world’s endangered Mountain Gorillas, and the equally threatened Batwa pygmies who have been excluded from the Forest. He leads a team of Ugandan staff who care for a population of 35,000 people in a remote, rural area where HIV and malaria are the biggest killers, malnutrition and tuberculosis are rife, and one in every seven children will die before they reach the age of five.

He trained as a doctor in the United Kingdom and has a Masters in Public Health. Before moving to Uganda in early 2006 he practiced family medicine and began a primary care service for refugees living in the United Kingdom. He has also worked as a medicolegal expert in the documentation of torture. He is a keen cyclist. His partner, Vicky, leads nursing at the Hospital. Both of them volunteer their time to their work in Africa.
